From dimensions to order
How the calculation works
- 01
Measure the project
Capture the length, width, height, or area from your plan or site.
- 02
Adjust material details
Choose units, product sizes, coverage, and a sensible waste allowance.
- 03
Review what to buy
See the calculated quantity and the practical amount to order.
Before you place the order
A calculator is the start of a good material plan.
- Confirm product dimensions and package coverage.
- Allow for cuts, breakage, spillage, and site conditions.
- Calculate separate areas when the project has different depths.
- Check the final order with your supplier or contractor.
Buildarith provides planning estimates, not a professional takeoff. Final quantities should reflect the product and the conditions on your site.
Planning questions
Frequently asked questions
What is Buildarith?
Buildarith is a free collection of construction calculators that help you estimate material quantities for common construction and home improvement projects, including concrete, gravel, mulch, asphalt, drywall, paint, flooring, tile, decks, and fences.
Are Buildarith calculators free to use?
Yes. All Buildarith calculators are free to use. You can open any released calculator, enter project dimensions, and get planning estimates without creating an account.
Are the results exact material takeoffs?
No. Results are planning estimates for comparison and ordering decisions. They are not professional takeoffs. Always verify product packaging, site conditions, and supplier requirements before buying materials.
Should I include extra material for waste?
Where a calculator provides a waste allowance, use it to account for cuts, spillage, breakage, or uneven surfaces. The right percentage depends on the project and material. Not every calculator uses the same waste options or defaults.
Can I use metric and imperial units?
Most Buildarith calculators support common imperial and metric units for project dimensions. Available units and defaults can differ by calculator, so check the unit selectors on the calculator you are using.
Should I verify product dimensions before buying materials?
Yes. Always confirm actual board sizes, sheet sizes, coverage rates, bag yields, and packaging from the manufacturer or supplier. Enter those product values in the calculator when they are available.
Does Buildarith include labor and delivery costs?
No. Buildarith focuses on material quantity estimates. Some calculators can optionally estimate material cost from a price you enter, but labor, delivery, taxes, fees, and installation are not included.
Can these calculators replace a contractor or professional estimate?
No. Use Buildarith for planning and comparison. For complex builds, code compliance, structural decisions, or final orders, consult a contractor, supplier, or qualified professional.
